Bursting with fresh guitar riffs and passion, ‘From The Night’ is indie-pop band Overpass’s first EP, proving the contagious potential they have. Supplying dancefloor tracks perfect for gigs and lyrics filled with emotion has always been Overpass’s forte on singles like ‘3am’ and ‘Right Time.’ Laced with intensity and enthusiasm, that energy hasn’t faded on ‘From the Night.’ The quartet is made up of Max Newbold on vocals, the guitarist Elliot Rawlings, the bassist India Armstrong and the drummer Jake Bishop.
A wash of guitar opens the standout track ‘Stay Up’ before Bishop's subtle drumming begins. Opening steady and comfortable the track takes a turn at the chorus which overflows with emotion. From Newbold’s powerful vocals to Rawling and Armstrong’s deep-cutting guitar riffs, Overpass never fail to create songs filled with charisma.
The title track ‘From the Night’ is a beautiful entry into the EP. Lyrics focus on the feeling of love and wanting someone to “save you from the night” creating a masterpiece. Bishop's drumming particularly shines throughout this track, sounding impulsive and thrilling. A pause near the end slows the song down but before long, Newbold’s vocals quietly pick up alongside gentle guitar. This drop in energy doesn’t last long as the fierce guitar riffs and eager drums power through the remainder of the track.
Another two tracks ‘Alright’ and ‘Wide Eyed’ have a similar vibe. The use of heavy guitar riffs taking over the songs remind me of bands like The Royston Club and The Snuts. Despite this, Overpass know how to make this style of music their own. Newbold’s vocals are incredibly infectious and never lose their fierceness. ‘Wide Eyed’ is fuelled by distinct guitar that holds an action-packed, vivid style.
Flawlessly closing the EP, ‘Beautiful’ is a pure and joyous track yet still provides the intense guitar and bass. ‘Beautiful’ feels like a summer song that you would blast driving around with the car roof down. It simply makes me feel comfy and blissful.
Overall, ‘From the Night’ will grip your heart with its moments of irresistible drumming and untamed guitar, not to mention Newbold’s intense but alluring vocals. Overpass continue to impress and will be on repeat this entire summer. With so much still to offer I can’t wait to see what’s next in their journey.
